A day before Google announced GMail, Yahoo sent out emails to some Yahoo Mail users offering them account upgrades consisting of larger storage and the ability to receive larger attachment files.
Currently, Yahoo allocates 6MB of space to non-premium users, while members that pay a subscription of $49.99 a year receive 100MB of email storage. Yahoo's new promotion allows invited users to receive 100MB of online storage at no charge.
Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako, speaking to CNETAsia, said, "as part of continuous promotional testings across the Yahoo network, we began offering some of our loyal customers various offers on Tuesday." She denied these promotions were related to Google's launch of GMail, which allows users 1GB of storage for free.
